Today VR and Star Wars fans got the news that they have been waiting for, Star Wars is coming to VR (100% officially this time).
Developed in collaboration between Google, Verizon and Disney, the experience will release on December 2 and will be wholly new to the Star Wars universe. According to StarWars.com, the experience will include a “compelling story and exclusive, never-seen-before content, which ties directly into the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Fans will be able to access the experience through the official Star Wars app on iOS and Andriod.
In addition to the experience, Verizon plans to distribute four uniquely designed and collectible Google Cardboard devices. The devices will also go on sale on the 2nd.
Previously Industrial Light and Magic, the effects studio behind the Star Wars films and many, many others, introduced a new studio focused on mixed reality application, ILMxLAB. The studio appears to be working on a number of Star Wars related projects, including one that lets you step into the film and choose how you view it and what characters you follow/embody.
Google isn’t only doing Star Wars in VR either, the company will have tie-ins with each of it’s apps and is asking users to choose the light side or dark side when signing into www.google.com/StarWars.
We will be sure to follow the studio’s activities closely and will report back with any additional information as it becomes available.
According to SlashGear.com and Google’s VP of Product Management, the experience will have “the Millennium Falcon in all its (virtual reality) glory included.”
